February 14, 2014 Lake Superior froze, making the Apostle Island ice caves accessible. I made the trek to see these spectacular wonders 3 times that winter. This particular day it was -30 degrees with the windchill. With a 5 hour drive in front of me, I left at midnight to ensure I arrived at the caves at sunrise. It is about a 6 mile round t...rip hike and certain I was prepared for this endeavor I had dressed in layers, ice cleats secure on my boots, hand warmers stuck in every possible place and protein bars and water in my backpack.

I arrived at about 5 am and began my venture to what seemed the frozen tundra. The caves were amazing to experience taking photo after photo, it was time to seek shelter in one of the caves for a small break. I pulled my water and protein bars from my pack and they both were frozen solid!! Needing this snack to keep going, I stuck the water under one armpit and the bar under the other. Lessons learned! The one thing I can honestly say though, as insignificant as this hike may have seemed in the grand scheme of things, I absolutely am glad that I did it!
